Which is the Best Raid for Video Editing?

Which is the best RAID for video editing? Of course it depends on what sort of editing you are doing, the connections you need and if you need to share data with multiple workstations or just with one user.

One User

Stardom has a great series of enclosures for direct attach applications. Everything from a 2 bay small lightweight portable RAID (that will fit in your pocket) through to 4 and 8 bay enclosures and an 8 bay thunderbolt RAID.

Most of these enclosures are available with full connectivity whether it’s USB, Firewire or eSATA. The two bay SR2 units offer RAID 1 protected or RAID 0 high-speed and the SR2-WBS3 has 2 x Firewire 800 plus eSATA and USB 3.0. The SR2-SB3 offers USB 3.0 only.

The 4 bay SR4-WBS3 also features full connectivity USB 3.0, Firewire or eSATA, these units can be configured as JBOD RAID 5 Protected or high speed RAID 0.

The SR2 and the SR4 support the 8TB drives.

If you need more capacity then the 5 bay and 8 bay options are excellent value and performance. The DR5 5 bay enclosure also supports the 8TB drives and provides connection for 2 x Firewire 800 Ports, 1 x Firewire 400 Ports, USB 3.0 Port ( up to 5 Gbps ) and e-SATA Port ( up to 3 Gbps ). It can be configured from the front panel to work in JBOD RAID 0, 1, 10, 3 or 5.

The 8 bay DT8-U5 uses 2 x Mini-SAS ports as connection and with an ATTO R680 SAS RAID Card can work in RAID 0 or RAID 5. The DR-8-TB is a stand alone thunder bolt RAID which will allow JBOD / RAID 0 / RAID 1 / RAID 5 / RAID 6 / RAID 10.

Remember all these units can be bought as just enclosures so that you can save money by installing your own hard drives.
